Take a look at Richard Warren's new site, which he linked on FOF. Lots of his fashion stuff is so sizzling hot that you cannot possibly think that the intent is "you can't touch this." It's more "can you aspire to touch this"...
Doug just used the perfect word to describe what you're nibbling at, and that's "catalog." While there's absolutely nothing wrong with a catalog shot, you don't sound like you're trying to replicate an old Sears catalog, either.
Your first image here, with the girl against the black backdrop, shows the same lack of attention to detail as the one Doug just critiqued, most notably the way her hair blends into the backdrop. It's a pretty good effort at a high school senior photo, but that isn't really in your lexicon, either.
In the one you just posted, you've committed one cardinal sin. It appears you're standing up, with the camera at or above the model's eye level. That makes her look like a munchkin. Remember to have your camera positioned more toward the center of her body, and you'll find that your pictures start taking on more of the look of fashion rather than snapshot. It's OK to point a camera up or down, if the model isn't just standing there in front of you ... if she's actually doing something. It can add to a sense of drama. But if you are standing in front of somebody like Aunt Suzie taking a picture of the kids, the result is going to have that snapshot feel.
You wonder what's the fun in sticking to something till you get it right. It's in really getting something right. THAT is the fun you'll experience, and it's heady stuff.
