The photography industry seemingly is built on confusion. Fashion supposedly has a far different point of view from glamour. Yet good fashion is often supposed to be glamorous. Huh?
This is like "inside the beltway" language in politics. It makes no sense to somebody outside.
In my case, I started off in journalism, which is really just story-telling. The art community where I lived took me in. And I've been tinkering ever since. Luckily, I don't have to stick to a genre because photos are an avocation right now. But back when I was trying to learn what a news picture was and wasn't, I also learned lots of other points of view.
Stumbling upon a surprise is a lot different from jumping into a a shoot and expecting to produce fashion, glamour, art and editorial material. Having the ability to recognize a special moment, regardless of the genre is a special skill, and one to be cultivated.
