I have not been able to directly compare the FUJI S2 and Canon Rebel or 300D. I imagine the quality is about the same. The new FUJI S2 claims a 12 meg capture but has only a 6 meg sensor so I think it does 6 meg and doubles it with software. If you really read about it in detail, they are careful to say they use a 6 meg capture.I think the best thing to think about is the type of lenses you will be using. FUJI camera and Nikon lens or Canon camera AND lens? Regular or Unleaded? Maybe we shoud wait for HP to do a SLR? Who knows they might?
- Low light photography with FUJI or Canon will easily beat film. I have rid myself of all the film cameras I used in medium and large format. The reason I had them is because folks used to need to use larger pieces of film for professional work with the OLD scanners. Larger film was so a high res scans could easily be obtained or so a large print could be made. Today in the new world of photography and computers. Scanners can get scans from small pieces of film. I have an Epson 3200 photo scanner and I can get scans from 35mm that are huge.2Gig in 48bit color. I would wager that I can do a "better" 11x14 than a lab can from the same piece of film. The use of 35 mm film cameras can now become different than it ever was. Tilt and shift are about the only functions of photography that are still most easily accomplished via 4x5. Medium and large format are basically antiques. 4x5 might be important for food but only a little. It used to be used able to be used to align or intersect the plane of focus with a plate of food. I somewhat feel that the use of film in no longer the professional's "best" choice. If considering the FUJI S2 and DIGITAL REBEL, the price of the Rebel makes it the winner. Buy a Rebel AND a Epson 3200. Make all you're film images digital from your library now. Today a HP9650 can print photos you can't tell from a old fashoined lab print without a microscope. Don't see many folks taking those microscopes around to art galleries. There has been a massive change in photography tools but techniques are still useful. The world is no longer flat! We did not send a single film camera to Mars. I guess there was a good reason. Film cameras are the wind up watches of the day. Tick....Tock...Tick....Tock...Tick....Tock... Passage of time has not changed but the tools to measure it have. Tools for presenting two dimensional images have changed, but they are still presented. Film renders a different image as will a painting or digital. The final use should choose the medium. Tick....Tock...Tick....Tock...Tick....Tock.. You can still get a wind up watch, but why can you still? You can still ride a horse to town, but why would you? Just listen to the headline."It will take NASA a bit to process the film they just got back from Mars but the photos will be made into billboards." .....Tock...Tick....Tock...Tick....Tock.Tock...Tick....Tock...Tick....Tock. Is the image I posted film or digital or just pretty darn good no matter what I used?
