It's been an eventful year; a war in Iraq, major fluxs in the economy, terrorism and terrorism alerts, but there is one major change not yet reported. Doug Lester, an old fart, chronic film shooter for more than 50 years, whose idea of a really nice camera is a 4x5, today entered the digital age. Yes it's true, about an hour ago I came home with a Canon 10D and accessories and with higher credit card indebtednes.

After making the decision to go digital, the decision was between the Canon DRebel and the 10D. OK, I'm biased, but Nikon was never a part of the question. Both the DRebel and 10D are outstanding cameras! My decision was close one, as in really, really close. Some have found fault with the DRebel and its plastic body, others with a few missing features which are found on the 10D. I found neither of those to be a significant factor. There were only four factors which ended up swaying me to the 10D.

First, the somewhat heavier duty construction which may (as in may?) hold up better long term. Though I have to say with the grip both felt good in my hand, the larger size of the 10D felt slightly better. Second, a large sale of 16x20 figurative art prints left me with extra cash burning a hole in my pocket. Without that sale and the extra money I would absolutely have gone for the DRebel; the difference was that close. Third, three hours earlier they sold their last DRebel and I would have had to wait a week before they got more. Yeah, I'm pretty much an instant gratification sort of guy. Once I make a decision I want to do it now and not a week later. Fourth, the store owner, who by the way owns and uses a DRebel (as the store owner he has lots of choices), said he would give me a Canon shirt if I bought today (It's a damn nice shirt, even though it says "Canon binoculars" on the pocket.

Yeah, the choice between the two was that close. Now I've got to open the boxes (assorted accessories) and see what the hell I've gotten myself into and begin climbing the learning curve.
