Actually, there are two things you're doing that aren't exactly the best idea. One is trying to scan Kodachromes on the Nikon scanner. It can be done, but they're not the best for the Nikon scanner. My best scans have come from Fuji slides. Second, if you're altering the settings to do b/w scans, you're probably messing up the color scans. The machine gets faked out big time by b/w negs.
Here's one of my scans from Fuji on an older Coolscan II. With the new software (downloadable free from Nikon site), you can get even better results.
Hate to say it, but even with Kodachrome, I don't know how you managed to get a scan that bad off the Nikon scanner. I'll post a Kodachrome follow-up, soon as I can find one.
