I'd say you definitely needed the Photoshop calibration. All the pictures on your site are dark, dark, dark.

Another thing to do is to edit your photos by the numbers. Go into levels and make sure you have a highlight and a black.
Use the eyedropper to check your white and ensure that they're at least close to a pure white.
If you are seeing 20 percent cyan in an area, it's too darn dark to be a white.

If your other programs look light to you, it's probably because you're used to seeing them dark. I had the same reaction when I first used Adobe Gamma on my machine.

Your next step is to buy a spyder program and device, then measure what's coming off your monitor.

Another consideration: if you're using those flat-screen monitors, they're inherently less accurate for color control than are CRTs. You'll need to start using the numbers on your images, the percentages of color, to determine the final "look" of an image.

Believe me, there's much more. Choosing the right color space, the right channel in your printer software, etc., etc., until you hit on the proper balance.
Even using different paper can make a difference in how the inks look.
