A crop is not a style.

Hey Roger,
I don't mean to contradict your input about headshots, but I do want to expand on the usefulness of a "3/4" headshot. As a vetran of well over 500 headshot sessions, I tried to develop a method of creating useful audition images for performers, actors, and models. What I found far more important than the crop of a photograph was the personality of the subject. Manytimes that was conveyed with the use of the hands and pose.

I suggested that the crop of the shot should include everything that gives the audience information and end where there is no more information to add. The term headshot is archaic. The mini trend as you put it has been widely accepted for more than 10 years in New York. When I began shooting headshots it was common to have four different headshots for legit, commercial, film, and t.v. markets. I saw that tradition change to a more universal shot that captured what the performer actually looked like (on a good day).

On looking at the Reproductions web site (which I was on for years), I noticed how little things have changed since the time I was more active in that market. Most of the names I competed with are still in that market, but I was surprised to see that some are still using images to market themselves that stretch back five years or more to when I was leaving the market. More than anything it confirms that the market for headshots shifts styles very slowly.
