Quite a ways below this post is a very useful thread started by David. He asked what made a great headshot, and there was a discussion and some examples. I'd recommend Gentle Readers who have not read that thread do so.

I just received the latest annual headshot book from Reproductions, a print shop here in NYC (and, I believe, in Los Angeles) that specializes in printing actors headshots. For those who aren't familiar with it, Reproductions has for several years published a book which compiles the work of many NYC headshot photographers. It's the best single printed reference source I'm aware of.

But getting that book also reminded me that they have a website which lists those photographers and their work. Do yourself a favor, spend a good deal of your time browsing the links at the URL below. It's like taking a Master Class in headshot photography from those who are actually in the business.

Before someone else points it out, these are almost all "actors' headshots" which differ in style from the "headshots" or "beauty shots" used by models. Still, they are well worth studying for the craftsmanship and artistry that can be brought to that all-too-often mundane part of the business.
