For the computer, I would suggest a Pentium IV, 2.6 Gb CPU with
an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe (and don't overlook the "Deluxe" part)
Motherboard. It has a 800 Mhz Front Side Bus (FSB), Dual Rate
DDR 400 Memory, 8x AGP, Firewire (1394) port and several USB 2.0
Ports.
A system with a standard AGP Video card, 500 Mb of Dual Rate
Memory (requires two 256 Mb memory sticks), two 120 Gb ATA100
7200 RPM disk drives and a DVD Drive should cost you around
$1,200.00 without monitor or printer, but with WinXP. Add your
choice of tape drive, CD-RW (or DVD-RW), and AGP Video Card for
the total cost. For a Video Card consider the Matrox P650 or
Matrox P750 (about $325.00) dual-head card with both analog (RGB)
and Digital (DVI) output plus video monitor for a third output.
Get the factory packaged CPU and Fan combo. As far as I know,
this is the only way to get a three year warranty on the CPU and
it usually cost the same, or about the same, as separate CPU and
Fan.
I would certainly go with two disk drives; put the O/S on the
first and your images on the second. Be sure to partition the
drives where the first partition contains only the O/S. If you
happen to have a copy of WinMe, Win98 or Win95 around, then
having a dual-boot system can help you recover if WinXP were to
get damaged. However, it also requires that the WinXP partition
be FAT32 rather than NTFS. For dual-boot, I would put a light
weight install of Win98 (for example) on Drive C, WinXP on Drive
D, applications and programs on Drive E, generic data such as
EMail folders on Drive F and images on Drive G thru Drive
whatever (at least Drive L). My favorite disk drives are Western
Digital (WD).
