: First of all, I need to upgrade my computer system (still using a Pentium II). and was wondering how much memory would be recommended for running Photoshop 7 the best (I know as much as possible but what would be the min.)

Memory? Yeah, ss much as possible! 512MB minimum, but memory is so cheap these days that you're best off with 1 or 2 GB. Beyond 1GB I don't think you'll see too much more improvement. I'd take a slower processor and more memory, if it comes to that choice.

: Second, if you could get any Digital SLR in the market what would it be. I'm having a clean slate since I've been using Minolta and they don't have a pro line so lens aren't a factor. I will be making this purchase in December so if you know of something new coming out around then, please factor that into your decision.

Dream machine? eos-1ds. I'm actually planning on upgrading my d30 to a 10d early next year. For event photography (weddings, environmental portraiture, etc) I may even tilt toward TWO 10d's.

I've always been partial to the Canon system. The EF 85 1.8 is my all-time favorite lens...small, cheap, flattering, and fast. Perfect for the portrait side of the business. The "new" 135 and 200 are probably more appropriate for the model/glamour work, they're very sharp and fast, just expensive.

From my understanding and experience, the Canons have a slight edge in focus speed and accuracy, and the Nikons have a real edge in flash exposure. For a studio setting, it's pretty much a wash.

Best bet: find a good dealer who will let you rent one of each for a few days, and WORK with them. Most of them have competitive prices on these units, and will give you a purchase credit based on your rental $.

I'm still doing more work on the portraiture/event photog side, starting to dabble in model portfolios, etc...but feel free to contact me off-list and I'll be happy to share my experiences with the d30.
