My first bad experience with an escort was before there WAS an Internet. I came home to find the place ransacked and all my stereo gear gone. Only a few people knew what was there. The cops didn't have enough to arrest the guy, but they all but told me who had raided my house. That was 1977.

Since then, I've been more than a little paranoid about such things. I've been lucky to have been robbed only a couple of times since then, and one of those was a mysterious disappearance of equipment while the "escort" was out of my sight.

A couple of models made sure to let me know how big and mean their escorts were. I figured their attitude didn't work too well with doing any sort of quality images, so I didn't book them.

It would be great if we could trust escorts/models to be honest and pure. But they're people, too, and some just aren't what they're supposed to be.

I know of a model who had money stolen from her home by a photographer who was visiting, so I'm not saying that only models/escorts are risks.

It just seems to me that there has to be a place in each encounter between model and photographer where the safety issue becomes a nonissue. How that's handled on both sides says a lot about the people involved.

I've pretty much taken the attitude that I treat anybody who shows up as a straightforward, upfront human being ... until he or she proves otherwise. But I keep my money in my pocket, I pack my photo gear away and I try to take mental stock of the props we've used before people leave. (It's always easier to ask if somebody accidentally packed away something.) But I still wind up with costume jewelry, bondage trinkets and costumes missing after shoots.

None of that has been physically dangerous to me ... yet. But we all need to be as safe as we can be.

Yes, you've been lucky. I hope you stay that way. And I hope I don't have any worse luck than I've already had by letting strangers into my place.
