If a Model objects to a chaperon being in the area, DON’T GO TO THE SHOOT!
Good post Doug, it raises up a question I wish were answered a lot more often, especially when shooting a model for the first time, or especially on location. Who exactly are you bringing to the shoot, if it's a live in boyfriend, I would like to know.
I really don't care who the model wishes to bring, however, I would like an idea as to who exactly they are. I have had my best, and worst shoots with Mothers, and Boyfriends. I try not to be judgemental, and to give everything a chance.
However, if a model insists upon her chaperon, and will not allow you to have an assistant/bodyguard. Do not book the shoot.
If they will not allow you to have an off duty Police Officer outside the door of the Hotel Room during the Shoot. Don't Do The Shoot! Especially if you are shooting them in a Strange City, with somebody you met on the Internet!
There are Scams running through the Modeling Sites, and some of the Models, are frankly, Hazardous to your Health. Some mean well, but are not a good decision from a financial point of view. Then there are some you should just avoid. I advise a phone conversation before any travel, or meeting on location.
If the Model is going to bring someone, you might want to find out who, and I do mean their Real Name! If you decide to do the shoot, make them a witness, and take a picture of their Drivers License. Have your assistant take a picture with their face in it. Or you can tell the Police that you think "Spike," took your camera bag.
It's a rough world out there, there's pretend models, and photographers both. There are also Scams on both, then there are situations to avoid. But that is another post.
