Roger, I have never head this explained better. You are so right. Mary

: You mean Bozeman isn't the Fashion Mecca of the free world, either? We'll see if the call comes in, but I hate seeing models told they need a comp, book, and media kit when, in fact, they'll NEVER use 'em. And the photographer that hooks up wsith an agency to mill out fake books is as guilty of fraud as the agency who ways they need it.

: As you can see I pretty much agree, Shane. But Robin got it right for the vast majority of attendees at these things. They don't really want to be models (meaning they don't want to have to do the things models do . . .), they just want to say they were, and have some mementos like pictures to show for it. Both the school and the student do this elaborate little psychological dance in which both sides know-but-don't-know that the whole thing is a charade. And at the end both sides get what they really wanted out of it.

: A photographer participating in that is then in a little bit of an ethical Bermuda Triangle. If they go along they are formally, overtly contributing to something they know is somewhat fraudulent; but at the "what is really going on" level they are providing exactly what all the other parties want and expect, and the value received is just fine.

: And consider the alternatives. It's entirely likely that Robin is the best photographer in town - with a little research, perhaps the only one capable of producing credible "model photos". If she doesn't take the assignment, somebody else assuredly will, and the outcome for all concerned will be worse.

: It's only for those (relatively few) aspiring models who really, seriously want to be models and think they are doing what it takes that this is a serious problem for. The others might as well consider it a form of psychologically gratifying entertainment.

: So in such a case the photographer isn't providing "marketing materials" for models, he/she is providing entertainment and the fulfilment of a fantasy which, when the shots are delivered, really is fulfilled.

: Strange world.
