: : I'm a male model repped in a small regional market.
: That's correct, Shane, but in your conversations with her bear in mind that her market area is about 1/10th the size of yours. Bozeman has a population a good deal less than 30,000 people.
Actually, while Bozeman is listed at under 30,000, the county is the fastest growing county in Montana and nearly all of the growth is outside the city limits. The immediate market area that Bozeman serves is more like 80,000. It is also becoming a very artsy, trendy community popular with movie stars etc. (One of my client's daughters has regular sleepovers at Meg Ryan's Livingston home (her father built the house for Meg and Dennis Quaid while they were still together and their kids and Meg's kids became friends). More to the point here, Bozeman is becoming a fairly popular place to shoot commercials. Another client of mine has been in commercials for Ford and one of the major soft drink companies (I forget which one) among other smaller jobs. Filmlights is a successful business here that makes a good living renting lighting and set equipment to movie and TV commercial makers (although the fires are putting a real damper on that industry!) Along with that there is at least some national print advertising shot here (due to our beautiful scenery). Still, I don't think any of this substantially changes your main point about the overall volume of work for models here. I don't know a single model working in Bozeman who doesn't have a "real" job to pay the bills. I am curious to see how this agency really makes their income, but like you said I'm sure the school has a lot to do with that. still, if at least some of their graduates are getting some real work, I won't feel that I'm participating in a scam.
Robin (by the way, I'm male, my name tends to mislead people :) )
