In camera dupe of client shot

: Photographers, what do I need to learn and to do differently from portraiture? How do you charge (flat fee, per image, etc.)? My prices are the highest in this area, my average family session is over $1000, for example...

Robin,

Here are a couple comments to consider. There are a number of photographers in any large city who shoot "model portfolios" as their bread and butter. More for potential Fashion models than for Glamour or commercial models, but that's not the point...

An average "portfolio" modeling session will cost a model anywhere from $800 to $1200 and net her from 5 to 8 (8" x 12") prints for her book. Shooting portfolio shots of a model for an agency for a book or Zeds pays somewhat less, but is much more consistant work, and you don't have to go find the business, it comes to you.

Shooting commercial shots is much different. For the most part, shooting model work is done at the request of the "client" who is normally the end user of the work (think Coors for a beer promo shot, etc.)

In that case, the fee charged for the photography work is based more on how the image is to be used, than anything else. If it's going into a National publication, full page, color... you would charge much more to shoot and "license" it than you would if it was going into the sunday newspaper supplement for the Hobocan Times at 3" tall.

Your best input will be from someone actually doing exactly what you're planning on however.

** The above shot is an in camera dupe of a client shot, used by the model as a promo **
