Regarding "agents" for models…

I am a photographer who occasionally uses models for my work. I do not work with models who are “represented” by a third party. Brace yourself for an astounding revelation. The fact that I will not work through a third party does not mean I am an exploitative pervert.

* It does mean that I do not particularly care to repeat everything to both the “agent” and then the model.

* It does mean I do not want to waste my time with a model whose OMP listing is due far more to her agent’s enthusiasm (or ego) than her own.

* It does mean I do not wish to have my offer evaluated or screened by someone whose total experience is limited to taking girls out to the park to squint under harsh sunlight for awkwardly posed snapshots in exchange for hints of future stardom.

* It does mean I have full faith in the ability of most young women to check the references I provide, consult with friends or family, decide for themselves about a shoot, and then bring someone along with them, all without the guidance of someone who, while swearing he is not an agent, behaves as if he is.

Now, you may be wondering, what reason I could have for posting these remarks. Simple. I tend to browse OneModelPlace.com (OMP) and when I see someone I would like to work with, I click on the little e-mail icon that allows me to contact the listed model so I can open a dialog. To avoid the above-mentioned problems I am very careful not to click on the little camera icon which is for contacting the photographer or “agent”. But, alas, to whom does my message usually go? You guessed it! It goes to the person who is “definitely not an agent”, but acts (quacks) like one. Inevitably, back comes the reply from the non-agent asking for references and all the details of the job so he can assess whether I am safe, the offer legitimate, and if the model will be interested.

I believe OMP is incredibly useful and well designed, but I would love to see a check box to indicate whether a model freelances or works through an agent (or non-agent, as the case may be). In lieu of that there is plenty of space to include a text statement to that effect. Not surprisingly, models who really are represented by legitimate agencies invariably make their affiliation with the agency clearly known up front. It would save me oodles of time if models listed on OMP would do the same.

Please note that I am not suggesting that models not work through an agency. I am only stating that I, as a photographer, would be ecstatic if there were a quick way to assess whether a model freelances or works through an agent (or someone who pretends to be).
