Bill, right now Kobe Bryant has been accused of sexually assaulting a young woman. Charges may be filed today, but the prosecutor had not decided as of Thursday whether to go forward with the case.
Even if the third party (prosecutor) decides not to proceed, Bryant's image has been tarnished, as far as being an endorser and a representative of the NBA.
If you let somebody's accusation, even accompanied by a denial, be circulated, and that accusation is false, it can damage a person's reputation, costing him lots of money.
Say somebody accuses you of having done some horrendous deed to a model? You deny the allegation. But you're going to let that allegation go out to all the members of the e-mail group? If so, I commend your bravery, but not your good sense.
Even in a full-fledged trial, there's a lot of discovery that goes on, to dredge out the truth of an issue. All you'll be doing is offering a model a chance to say "he's scum" and the photographer to say "no, I'm not."
While many of the e-mails you guys will be swapping may be simple matters of "he didn't provide me my prints as soon as he agreed," it looks as if you're more interested in "he put his hand up my dress."
With something like this going on, I understand why photographers might want to videotape a shoot, just so they can prove they didn't do anything wrong.
There is a better way to handle the predators out there. File charges against them, as in the Kobe Bryant case. Let prosecutors decide if the person should be tried. If it gets that far, let the jury decide if the person is guilty or innocent.
This vigilante e-mail campaign simply cannot be a good thing.
