Owen, you seem very defensive about your work, well I can understand that, many of us are. And yes, among other things this forum is for the critique of image, voicing opinions concerning them and offering advice. But try to accept that Michale has a point and is offering valid suggestions.
To be honest, the prints you have been posting look very muddy on my pretty well calibrated monitor. To such an extent that I had assumed you to be a novice printer. But based on your comments in this thread concerning your experience, I expect the problem is with your scans. The content of your images is good and shows original and interesting content, but they are all mid tone, totally lacking in the higher tones and with completely blocked shadows.
This isn't an attack in any way, just letting you know of a problem. Maybe your monitor needs calibration. I leaned from my own experience that an image can look great on my monitor, but really suck on another, unless both are at least somewhat calibrated.
BTW, Michael is a highly accomplished shooter, among the best on the forums today. Perhaps his suggestions should not be written of so glibly?
