: Your photo seems to be what you don't like "a record of a particular time and place." What is the story?
: I personally like all types of photographs.
: My suggestions for yours:
: I think the idea is very good but the lighting is way too flat. What about some shadows to give it some feeling and mood? How about a less contrived, more natural pose? I think the tonal range is a bit limited as well. Are you shooting film or dig? Just suggestions. Don't take it as a knock on the image or model.
Ok, lets see how I do answering your questions......
Throughout civilization Religion has always been a motivating force in all the Arts. So that is the story, a reocuuring theme in some of my work, since religion is timeless in many ways.
I have had friends say that they like "all foods" and other friends say they like "all music". To me, at least, it shows a lack of taste (by definition). I have seen your work, and you can't kid me, you certainly have prefrences for certain types of photography.
This is a good thing.
Next, lighting. Looking at the silver print, I see shadows and a contrast ratio consistent with what I wanted. Perhaphs I did not do a good job digitizing it? You being a professional photographer, I am sure you know how contrasty the outdoors is when you are at 7,000 feet elevation. Speaking of shadows, you and I must share the same distane for those photographers that use these hughe umbrellas and have light coming from everywhere with absolutly no shadows anywhere.
This was shot using 4X5 Tri-X, I like to shoot 8X10 as well. I usually mix my own developer - a sulfite/metol compensating developer, again to help out with the contrast. I have included a snapshot of the setup which further illustrates why I only take snaps at family occasions and vacations or other non-publishable events.
Hopefully, I have touched on your questions and maybe eliminated at least a little of your confusion.
Thanks,
Owen
