Your photo seems to be what you don't like "a record of a particular time and place." What is the story?
I personally like all types of photographs.
My suggestions for yours:
I think the idea is very good but the lighting is way too flat. What about some shadows to give it some feeling and mood? How about a less contrived, more natural pose? I think the tonal range is a bit limited as well. Are you shooting film or dig? Just suggestions. Don't take it as a knock on the image or model.
