SPRINGFIELD -- A federal judge here convicted a man from Georgia on Wednesday for three crimes related to child pornography. One of Gary Smith’s victims lives near Nevada, Mo.

A grand jury indicted Smith last year for production, transportation and distribution of child pornography by the U.S. mail system and the Internet. Investigators said he ran an underage modeling Internet site and convinced teenage girls to pose for nude pictures. His business was based in Atlanta and Chicago. Law officers raided Smith’s homes in Georgia and Illinois and found computer discs, papers, cameras and pictures that they think were used to make and distribute child pornography. The only indictments against him, however, were in Missouri.

Smith waived his right to a jury trial and District Judge Richard Dorr heard the testimony and arguments during a two-day trial. Prosecutors presented evidence that Smith had pictures showing a girl from Vernon County engaging in nude and sexually explicit conduct, for which she was paid. Her parents said they allowed Smith to take clothed pictures of the girl but didn’t know about the unclothed photos.
