It has happened again...a young woman was appraoched in shopping mall in the LA area this week by a "photographer". She told friends later that day that she was going to audition for him and has not been seen or heard from since then. Prospective models, BE CAREFUL!!!
When I started in this business 30 years ago, approaching potential models in public was a good way to find new talent. But in this day and age it is just TOO dangerous for 'new' models to believe anyone without checking out referances, the BBB, other established photographers or other models the photographer has used.
I am retired from the business now and just shooting for my own personal work. Almost all the models I use are referred to me by people I've worked with or that are familiar with my work from my 'pre-retirement' days. I know that I am probably preaching to the choir but I just want to re-emphasize the need for models and potential models to take extra care who they are dealing with. Please, please...always make sure that you leave phone numbers, locations, expected time to be gone and any other pertinent information with family or friends.
