David,
If anyone was commerically viable, then its JT Smith. I'm not sure how a tearsheet quantifies someone to teach or not, just like someone who's never put out an album shouldn't teach someone to play gutair. JT has been a professional photographer for probably over 15 years, and has gotten paid well for his work with individuals and workshops. He has taught many times over to scores of people who attend his instructionals every year. He can light a portrait and create images that are unheard of.
So, he hasn't been published and isn't qualified? Ask any one of the photogs who were neophytes, such as myself, and are no longer due to Mr. Smith's instruction.
Lastly, are you qualified to determine if someone is qualified? Where's YOUR portfolio?
Thanks for reading,
Jim
