right off the bat, it sounds to me like the wrong choice of film, combined with under exposure, rather than over-exposure.
Reala is a great film. But it is NOT known for being punchy or highly saturated. If you want those, you need another kind of film. I'd suggest Vericolor commercial.
Secondly, under-exposing color negatives will make things muddy fast. I'd go for a slight over-exposure. Under-exposure by maybe a third stop works -- IF you are using reversal film.
Finally, if you really want saturation, shoot slides. But you better get a really tight grip on exposure if you decide to do that.
